Researchers at Harvard are studying smoking’s effect on the lungs by using a machine that replicates human breathing and smoking. A team at Harvard’s Wyss Institute designed a cigarette-smoking robot that inhales and exhales just like a human. That air flows into a tube in a chip coated with live lung cells from a patient. Researchers can test different levels of smoke on multiple chips with cells from the same person. It could help scientists better understand how smoke affects individuals.
